Deb's 'Sweet Sweater Pumpkins' Class
One of the best parts of our Petite Retreat Autumn Vintage Market on Saturday was my 'Sweet Sweater Pumpkin' class! Five vivacious and fun girls joined me in our newly-renovated hay barn for a few hours of creativity and laughter, while I demonstrated the simple techniques of making my original designs.
I'll have baskets & baskets full of these little darlings for sale in our booth at the upcoming Remnants of the Past show - in under two weeks!
And since it's not too hard to figure out how these are made, I just want to ask one favor:
If you make some of these and post them online, or offer them for sale, I only ask that you politely credit me as the originator of the design, and call yours something else... thanks! Let's all play nice in the vintage & craft industries, shall we?
Photographer Elise Liptack captured it all - you can see her images here.
{including this one, below}
My hastily-snapped photos are below:
Each participant created two of their own 'Sweet Sweater Pumpkins'... and I LOVE how different they all are! Their choices of sweater fabrics & colors, and then embellishments of ribbon, leaves, sparkly bling and other elements made each one a unique and personal masterpiece. {My white one is shown at the top of this post}.Inspiring, yes?!

Petite Retreat Special Guest Vendor: 'Elise Marie Photography'
Capturing the personality of a subject in a photo is no easy task...we've all seen hundreds of school photos that make us wince. {and let's not talk about those drivers' license photos!} A photographer who can bring out the best smile, sparkle, and spirit of the photographee is truly an artist worth their weight in gold. Elise Liptack is one of those artists who use a camera and film as her medium. Elise studied art at the University of Washington, and her finely homed skills add depth and dimension to her photographic work. Her business is Elise Marie Photography.
We met Elise because she is a customer of ours, always checking in with us at shows to see what kind of chairs we bring... you see, Elise has a growing collection of interesting and unique chairs & furniture, and uses them as props for her photo sessions. Fitting the props and locations and wardrobe selections to the unique personalities of her subjects is part of the masterpiece. Her love of working with natural light leads her to work in the warm light after sunrise and before sunset.Elise will be snapping photos of our show setting and of vendors & guests having a great time... We are working on a cute prop setup for posed photos, but this RAIN is not helping that process at all! {Hey, at the very least, we'll round up some nifty chairs.... !} You'll be able to talk with her about booking her for a photo session for your own work of art. Elise's favorite subject is girls of all ages... but her family portraits are fabulous!
Visit Elise's web site and blog for more info and her portfolio!

Petite Retreat Special Guest Vendor: 'Scandia Coffeehouse'
We've invited a marvelous local purveyor of fine fresh-baked goods to join us on Saturday at Petite Retreat Autumn Vintage Market, and we think you are going to really love what she will have for you. Donna King, owner of Scandia Coffeehouse & Eatery, will be offering a tantalizing selection of her famous fresh-baked pies, scones, and cookies - all sure to have your mouth watering!
Scandia Coffeehouse & Eatery is dedicated to serving only the best espresso, tea, fresh-baked pastries, and homemade soups, salads and sandwiches. Owner Donna King started her business as a coffeehouse with a vision of becoming a community gathering place. She named it after the old Scandia Bakery which graced the town of Stanwood for decades, after noting that the community was losing its Scandinavian heritage.
From simple beginnings - and a massive remodel of the building itself - Scandia Coffeehouse & Eatery has grown into a real cafe. It seems to be the natural course of the life of this business, and it's exciting as well: As Donna posted on her blog during that growth, "Today we baked fresh bread to go with our homemade soup. That's way more satisfying than just making latte's all day."
Scandia Coffeehouse & Eatery is located at 908 State Route #532
(South side of the highway right in front of the giant smokestack, and on your way to Camano Island!} 360.629.2362 Please visit their blog and website to learn more & see their full menu. This would be a great lunch spot on Saturday, after you shop our event!
Donna's booth at our event will be located under the covered Breezeway, adjacent to our Petite Barn. All Vendors are located under cover in case of rain... but it's not going to rain! ;0)

Petite Retreat Special Guest Vendor: 'Garden Party'
Autumn is such a perfect time of year to add seasonal touches to your decor...
and we know of no one better at bringing nature;s bounty & beauty inside than Debi Bock of 'Garden Party'! She works her magic with flowers & fronds, leaves & branches, and roadside posies.... and yes, Debi can even make WEEDS look fabulous! Her creations are inventive and whimsical, something you haven't seen before. Debi is not only a floral & event designer, but also an inspired antique dealer.
A veteran of many Northwest shows, she's currently working with Linda Morrison and Janet Sears - the trio produce & promote the new 'Second Saturdayz' Flea Market in Seattle each month. It's held on the second Saturday of every month at Sand Point Hangar #30 at Magnusson Park, and is just what Seattle needed! Petite Retreat Special Guest Vendor: 'Rose~Marie'
We had the delightful pleasure of meeting Jo Marie Richman several years ago...
We were both vendors at Faded Elegance Antique Boutique in Everett, and when the store relocated to Snohomish, Jo Marie's booth was right across from ours! We've since seen each other at shows, and also on buying trips. And now we are thrilled to bring her to our Petite Retreat event as a special guest vendor!Jo's business is 'Rose~Marie' and her tagline is 'Romancing the Home'
As a collector of antiques, vintage textiles, and decorator dress fabrics, Jo never lacks for inspiration. She mixes & matches vintage & new textiles to create sumptuous table linens, pillows, and gift items - all of her own original design. Jo's talent also lies in her ability to present her beautiful wares in perfectly-styled charming vignettes to inspire. Her products are still available every day at Faded Elegance, and also at Mutiny Bay Antiques & Fine Living in Freeland, on Whidbey Island. Jo's busy show schedule is available on her web site.Jo Marie is a seasoned dressmaker, inspired by all things vintage.
Her creativity is expressed through her original designs and use of high-end textiles both old & new. Made with whimsy, attention to detail, and quality, every item from her heart & hands is sure to delight you! The 'Rose~Marie' line of vintage-inspired skirts & aprons will make you smile and take a twirl around the room... just look at her newest designs!
'Rose~Marie' will be located under our big tent, adjacent to the breezeway.

Petite Retreat Special Guest Vendor: 'My Mother's Buttons'
Linda Wright's love of antique buttons began in her childhood, as she played with her mother's capacious button box. When Linda inherited the collection, her creativity took wing and she began designing beautiful jewelry with vintage, antique, and collectible buttons. Out of her passion, her business 'My Mother's Buttons' was born...
We met Linda at the Seattle Gift Show over eight years ago, and have always admired her cheerful attitude, beautiful work and stylish displays. We are so thrilled to have her participate in our Petite Retreat Autumn Vintage Market, and we know that you will LOVE her flair for taking a bit of history and making it totally fresh & engaging!

"Let's Roll...."
Throughout the course of history, unimaginable events have unfolded that always seem to result in the question, "Where were you when... John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas? Neil Armstrong walked on the moon? Elvis/Marilyn/Princess Diana died? The Towers fell?"
Memories of where we were, how we heard the devastating news, and how we reacted are indelibly burned into our minds. The events of just a few hours in history on September 11th, 2001 affected each of us individually, and changed us as a nation. They changed the course of many, many lives in ways some of us cannot begin to imagine.
While we stop and reflect on the lives lost on that day in the Twin Towers, on the streets of New York, in the Pentagon in Washington D.C., and in a field in Pennsylvania, let us also pause in remembrance of all of the lives that have been sacrificed SINCE then, in defense of our freedom as Americans, and of the lives of those who lost someone they loved. With no less honor and courage than those who served others in the hours following the terrorist attacks, men and women from all walks of life have given their all in the pursuit of justice and freedom for our country for years. For all Americans.
And let us ALL live each day with the same resolve to prevent such a horrible act from recurring as those on flight 93 did.... "Let's Roll....."
