SWEET!

See those sweet swanky curvy chairs?
We had four of them for sale at Farm Chicks last June.
Saturday, they were admired by nearly every woman who saw them.
Sat upon like thrones, even. But not purchased. Curious.

And then, on Sunday morning,
Miss Easy Breezy sashayed her way into our booth,
took one look at them like they were her long-lost soulmates,
then smiled, ran her hand over the back of one,
 and whispered
"Yeah, I'll take those!"

And she did.
She took them HERE!
I spied this photo on Elaine's TinkerVerve blog recently
and let out a little yelp of joy,
cuz' there are those sweet chairs over on the left!
If any tiny portion of these chairs appear in the new
feature on Celeste, CHAPS, and CAKE, well,  I may just shed a tear. ;0)

{Truth be told, sweet Celeste chose a generous number of things within five minutes - including a set of vintage diner chairs covered in burlap, seen on the OTHER side of that table! - paid us, and then went on her merry way. Her minions returned to trundle her finds to her truck. CAN I BE HER, PLEASE?!!!! }

Curiouser and Curiouser!

 Retreat nested tables at 'the Curious Nest'

Last winter at the Sand Point Antique & Design Market in Seattle, we met a charming and stylish European couple when they shopped our booth. Andrea and Laurent Savar told us their plans to open a new boutique in Seattle back then, and we have heard about their progress along the way {including buying trips to FRANCE.... le sigh}.
 Retreat collage desk at 'the Curious Nest'

We have been honored by their choices of some Retreat designs as their display fixtures for the shop... Andrea & Laurent attended our Autumn Petite Retreat and had a field day selecting furniture & lighting for their new retail space! Several are shown in the photos above.
Their beautiful boutique, 'the Curious Nest', opened this past weekend!

It is, of course, as charming as they are! Their website describes them this way: "The Curious Nest is home to assortment of found and created treasures. From French antiques and found objects to one-of-a-kind artwork created by local artisans, our hope is to present a collection of unique and ever changing items to complete your own nest." Andrea snapped some photos of the shop before opening the doors, and you can see it all in this post on her blog. This is certainly a very welcome addition to the vintage scene in Seattle - make sure you visit them this holiday season!

Retreat Holiday Style

 Since I can't exactly put on my 'holiday decorating hat' quite yet,
{and yes, that IS one of my original designs in the photo!}
I thought I'd at least reflect on the past few Christmases via photos & blog posts.
Amazing to see how our tastes change each year!
Holidays are such a great time to experiment
with new colors, styles, and themes that vary from the everyday look -
it's not like you have to live with it forever!

If you'd like a peek at how things are done in our house, Retreat Style
here's a list of links to blog posts both here and on Deb's personal blog
that show our Holiday Design evolution over the past few years.
{click each to view post}

And for those of you may be wondering what the decor will look like
around our place this year...join the club!
I haven't the faintest idea!!!
Once this move is completed, inspiration will surely strike.
Won't it???

Missing It

Wow, this is really strange... we feel like we are in the Twilight Zone!

It's the Holiday Season, and all of the dealers and artisans and shop owners we know are hot & heavy into it: shows, sales, events, etc. Last year, so were we. (The photo above is from our space at Sand Point last December) This year, we had plans to open our very own boutique store in our Petite Barn, opening every weekend leading up to Christmas.... but sadly, the sale of this property ended THAT plan before we ever got it off the ground.

It's bizarre to be focused on packing and moving, instead of on designing & creating product, then selling at shows and to shops, during one of the busiest parts of the year. Or even on decorating our own home. Very unusual for us. We are really missing the Holiday hubbub!

And what's even more strange is that after we get everything moved into storage at the end of November, we'll have from one to two weeks (still waiting for a timeline from the escrow company) before we can even begin to move into our new place. Two weeks OFF. In December. ??? What do we do with that?! {Yes, we had planned to go to Texas. Great idea, but sadly, it's just not in the financial picture now.} I {Deb} still have two of my long-term residential clients to decorate for during the first week of December, and am looking forward to that.... I just love helping these two remarkable women turn their homes into holiday retreats. ;0)

If you have some ideas for things we can do during our 'break', please let us know!

Goodnight, John Boy.....

Do you recognize this house?
Many of us (ahem) 'older folks' remember it well.
It housed the Walton family,
and was filled with love, laughter, joy, sorrow, faith, and strength.
It was humble, yet welcoming.
People grew closer to one another and lives were changed in & around it.
Just watching that tv show in the 70's & 80's changed lives.

All things that we hope will happen in our new house -
which looks remarkably like this one. ;0)
Not exactly, but close. A bit smaller!

Things are moving right along on the purchase of the new property on the island,
a place where we can continue to grow our business,
build a barn & store to host our shows in,
and live the kind of meaningful lives we desire.
{um, not to mention the DECORATING part!}

We are so blessed by the many miracles that have occurred on this journey...
by the generosity of friends, of their faith in us,
and of their unwavering support that led to this new home for us.

And the day we found this wonderful place?
The sun broke out from behind the clouds and we all rejoiced.
The day the offer was accepted, we did a little jig.
The day we were allowed to place the 'SOLD' sign by the road,
we shouted for joy!
Now it's the hard part of waiting for closing, and moving our stuff.
{We have a LOT of stuff.}

We'll be moved in for Christmas, and that is a blessing in itself.
We can't gather our whole family this year, but maybe next...
I can already hear everyone giggling in the dark,
saying 'Good night, JohnBoy'. 'Good night, JimBob'.

Or perhaps in our case, 'Good night, DeBob' ;0)

God is so good!

Retreating...but...NOT

So, the question has been how much to share...
how 'aloof' and 'professional' to remain in a 'public arena'...
how much 'spin' to put on massive business changes...
what to reveal and what to hide about the reality of our lives...
and whether or not to mention anything at all
when it's NOT all happyhappyjoyjoyland around here.

All questions we've had, discussed, and been 'advised' on over the past three months. Often after the fact, mind you, but all coming from our hearts as we face each day.

Many people just don't say anything about anything that is going on with them.{I think Thoreau called that 'Living Lives of Quiet Desperation'.} Others make up happy stuff and stay busy to hide the real stuff from view.We heard from both of those kinds of people about the stuff we've chosen to share on our blogs & facebook Pages during the past few months. It wasn't all good, btw. Got an earful a few times from people who think we've trashed our business by saying anything at all about difficulties. OK, so that's how they see it. Fine.

You know, to us, it all comes down to this:
Either we are who we are, and we act that way,
or we are something else entirely - and we hide that fact from everyone.

Yeah, well, those of you who know us at all can see why
option A was really the only choice for us.

So, as we've been on this rollercoaster ride of life lately, we've not only shared the ups - but the downs. Not only shown you the happy 'Show Face' that we put on during an event, but the real behind-the-scenes faces of two people working incredibly hard to build their dream and live the life they have chosen and how much it all means to us. We've admitted that at times, it's been more than we could handle, and asked for your prayers, thoughts, and positive intentions on our behalf. We've managed to set aside all of the pride and posturing and 'positioning' that some think is necessary to support an 'image' in business. Instead, we've been transparent with our friends, family, customers, readers, and 'fans', letting them into our hearts - more than just into our shows or booths or websites.

Most importantly,
we've looked at what we do, why we do it, and how we do it,
and let one very obvious fact guide it all:

God gave us this dream, this vision, this goal.
He also gave us the ability, talent, experience and passion to actually DO what we do.
He gave us some wonderful friends, customers, and a community of vintage enthusiasts who DO care about us, and each other.
And He is the one who gives us direction - who paves the road in front of us, making it possible for us to keep doing this every day. Even when we don't get it, or see it, or understand it {or can admit it}, He's in control.

And so, if God Almighty chooses to use our voices - blog - web site - facebook Page - et cetera to bring attention and Glory to His name, well then, we aren't going to complain.
Or shut up, get over it, DEAL, or make up something 'happy' to focus on.
Honestly, if it bothers you to read about people's struggles, don't.
But that doesn't mean we can't share them on our own blog.

Because there is no way we could have come through what we have been through without the miracles that God has brought to us along the way... friends, family, and people we barely know have stepped up to help, to pray, to support us through this dark night of our souls. They would never have known that we needed help if we hadn't spoken up and told our story.

{Melody wrote a great post about this very thing HERE
Go read it. No, really.... I'll wait.....}

We had to be honest and transparent and humbled in order to get the help we needed.We had to sit aside our own pride, and ASK for help. And be real. In so doing, we found remarkable people came to our aid. When you've spent years of your life in service to others, as we have, it's hard to get to that place. It's humbling and sometimes almost painful to ask others to do for you what you can't do for yourself at the time. It was really hard for Bob to let other guys work with me on our farm, getting ready for Petite Retreat in September.... while he sat in a chair and watched. It was hard for me to let my dad and mom sell our products at Remnants, when I needed a break because my voice was gone.

But letting others step up and help us transformed us, and made us ever more passionate about helping others even more as we go forward with our business plan. It's not about money. It's not about followers or fans or likes or published articles. It's not about positioning or strategy or brand image. It's about community, friends, and helping one another. It's about getting REAL with ourselves, with you, with God.

The best part about all of this?
That so many of you have sent us emails, comments, and left comments here on our blog, to say that our faith has touched you. That our journey has resonated with you and that you are looking at things differently now. Or that we have encouraged you through our words. {Let me tell ya, folks, encouraging someone else is not at ALL what I thought would come out of this mess. I was wondering if we'd have even one single blog reader left by the time we could report any good news from these parts!}

But God always has a plan...
So wherever YOU are, whatever you are in the midst of, just hang on

Grab faith like it's the mane of a horse going sixty down the track to keep yourself from falling off. Hang on to hope like the knot in the end of your proverbial rope. And call out to God for strength, for clarity, for peace so that you can hear Him. And if you are worried about how it's gonna' look to your friends, customers, fans, etc. that you admit that you are {GASP} not perfect or in control... well.... just do it anyway. Be honest. Be you, just as He intends you to be. God will use it for His glory, and for your best. He really will.

We can't wait to share all that has changed, all that is ahead, as soon as we can.
He's given Retreat a whole NEW meaning... ;0)
